Kitchen Safety Tips
The kitchen is one of the most dangerous rooms in the house and potentially a haven for accidents, fires, food poisoning and infestation. The key to preventing them is organisation, planning and plain common sense. Ensure there is enough space for you to walk around, the areas around heat sources are safe, the kitchen is clean, food is properly stored and pests cannot get in.
Below are some top tips on how to keep safe in the kitchen.
- Make sure all wires and electrics are tucked in or pushed to the back of the appliance to prevent tripping or falling over wires.
- When cooking make sure saucepan handles are not hanging over the side of the hob.
- Clean up all spills immediately.
- Store knives in a wooden block or drawer.
- Always use a stool on an even surface when reaching down objects from high shelves or cupboards.
- Never leave food on the hob unattended.
- Be careful when lifting lids on saucepans, because steam can cause scalding or burns to your skin.
- Never stick a metallic object such as a fork in the toaster to rescue any lost pieces.
- Be careful of sharp edges from a tin opener or kitchen scissors when opening packaging.
- Do not leave glasses of liquid near hot grease because if the two mix the steam created can cause injury.
- Make sure all the electrics on appliances are safe to use.
- Do not leave any naked flame unattended.
- Avoid wearing baggy clothing when cooking or hanging jewellery. Tie any long hair back or wear a hairnet.
- Keep cloth items such as kitchen towels and oven mitts away from the cooker.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen, but not adjacent to the cooker or heater.
- Keep all electricity away from water and water away from electricity
- Do not put polystyrene or cardboard containers in the microwave or oven.
Preventing Health problems
- Keep your kitchen clean! Wash dishes regularly after use, mop the floor and brush up any bits after every time you cook.
- Always wash your hands thoroughly before cooking.
- Make sure all work surfaces and chopping boards are clean and disinfected.
- Always store food as it should be. Cold food (fresh) should be stored in a fridge at 5 degrees or under and frozen food below 0 degrees.
- Always store raw meat separately. Do not let it come into contact with cooked food as this can cause contamination. Raw food should be stored on the lowest shelf of the fridge or freezer so it does not drip onto other foodstuffs.
- Do not prepare food if you have recently been ill with a sickness bug as this can be passed on easily to others.
- Empty kitchen bins out regularly to avoid contamination.
- Always cook meat properly so that the juices run clearly and are the same colour right the way through.
- Always have a first aid kit handy so any cuts can be easily covered when preparing food.
- Throw away any rotten or contaminated food immediately.
- Do not leave open food anywhere in the kitchen.
- Clean up constantly after yourself…and that includes the dishes.
- Buy food in cans or jars, as these are more difficult for insects or rodents to penetrate.
- Seal up any cracks in which insects may nest in or gain access to your kitchen.
- Inspect the backs of cupboards and walls to make sure rodents cannot get in. Seal up any holes with materials such as steel wool.
- Check your water pipes and make sure there are no holes in which insects can crawl through.
- Empty your bin regularly.
- Check any fans and ventilation systems as these can be a haven for flying insects.
